Hugo ‘s main event this season will be the ITTF World Table Tennis Championships in Doha, Qatar, from May 17 to 25. Third seed in the Men’s singles event, he comes in boosted by his historic victory in the World Cup in Macau last month.

This will be Hugo’s 7th individual appearance at the World Championships. His best result so far was a 5th place in the 2021 edition, held in Houston, USA.

Here’s everything you need to know about the competition:

VENUES

The World Championships will be held in two venues in Doha. The main venue will be the Lusail Multipurpose Hall, where the most important matches of each day will be played. The arena can be attended by up to 15,300 people.

During the first four days of the competition, the Qatar University Sports Complex will also host matches.

WHAT WILL BE PLAYED

The World Table Tennis Championships will feature Singles (Men’s and Women’s) and Doubles (Men’s, Women’s and Mixed) tournaments.

CLASSIFICATION SYSTEM

Qualifiers for the World Championships have been determined in three different ways for the individual events:

  • 32 spots by the world ranking
  • 93 spots by the continental qualifying events
  • 3 spots for the host country

Hugo secured his place through the ranking, in which he is currently ranked 3rd. He will be the 3rd seed in the Men’s Singles.

BRAZILIANS IN DOHA

Brazil will have seven players in the individual events. In addition to Hugo, Vitor Ishiy, Leonardo Iizuka and Guilherme Teodoro will compete in the Men’s bracket. In the Women’s draw, Brazil will have Bruna Takahashi, Giulia Takahashi and Laura Watanabe.

In the Doubles events, there will be four pairs: Hugo/Bruna and Guilherme/Giulia in the Mixed Doubles; Vitor/Guilherme in the Men’s Doubles; and Giulia/Laura in the Women’s Doubles.

COMPETITION SYSTEM

All the World Championships matches will be played on a knockout basis, with 128 participants in the Singles draw and 64 in the Doubles draw.

The singles matches will be played in best-of-7 games. The doubles matches will be up to 5 games each.

WHAT’S AT STAKE

Alongside the Olympic Games and the WTT Grand Smashes, the World Championship awards the highest ranking points on the entire tour. Here’s what’s at stake:

  • Champion: 2,000 points
  • Runner-up: 1,400 points
  • Semifinals: 700 points
  • Quarterfinals: 350 points
  • Round of 16: 175 points
  • Round of 32: 90 points
  • Round of 64: 45 points
  • Round of 128: 10 points
